Foss Maritime Hybrid Tugs

AKA, in collaboration with their Hybrid Technology partner, XeroPoint Energy, was contracted by Foss Maritime to provide the propulsion and control systems for the world’s first hybrid tug the Carolyn Dorothy. The project incorporated a combination of diesel engines, electric motors, generators and electrical storage.

Building on the success of the World’s First Hybrid Tug, the Carolyn Dorothy, Foss worked with AKA to expand the use of hybrid technology in their fleet. Foss proceeded with the retrofit of the Campbell Foss, a conventional tug currently assisting oceangoing vessels in San Pedro Bay.

AKA's XeroPoint Hybrid system was installed on the vessel at Foss’ shipyard in Rainier, Oregon.
