AKA Announcing Partnership with MAN Diesel & Turbo - Two leaders in Marine Power and Propulsion grow together

Canadian, Prince Edward Island based engineering firm Aspin Kemp and Associates Inc. (AKA) and German based MAN Diesel & Turbo SE solidified a new working relationship this week. An agreement was reached between the two companies that will see MAN Diesel & Turbo acquire a 40 percent holding in AKA.

Through this new partnership, AKA is looking forward to building its innovative potential and bandwidth with MAN in a broader market for power and energy solutions. Company co-founder Jason Aspin will remain a controlling shareholder and CEO of AKA, co-founder Neale Kemp will be retiring from active business operations.

AKA Executed their 4th Successful Live Short Circuit Test Over the Past Two Year

Our AKA team at the DSME shipyard in South Korea on the H.3509, simulated a short circuit test using cascade testing on both generators and live short circuit testing was successfully done on the same vessel. The 3509 is an Ultra-Deepwater Drillship of 5 sister ships equipped with AKA’s integrated DP3 Closed Bus-Tie/Closed Ring Operation System and Hybrid Drill Floor System. The test was executed successfully as the system performed in a highly predictable manner.

Both the live and simulating tests were witnessed by Transocean, Shell, DNV-GL Consulting, DNV Class, and DSME. Representatives from Shell were very impressed with the cascade testing exercise.

AKA Power Plant technology for the Deepwater Conqueror

AKA is proud to have supplied the power generation technology for the Deepwater Conqueror. This is the third ship in the series of five being built by DSME for Transocean. AKA personnel were on-board as the vessel entered service in the Gulf of Mexico in late December. Through our collaboration with Transocean, GE, DSME and other partners, we have contributed to build the most reliable and fuel efficient drillships of their kind. Our equipment was made with care in PEI, Canada, and is a key component of these vessels.

Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA) participated in a DP3 closed bus-tie workshop held in China this week. The workshop was a joint presentation hosted by AKA and DNV GL. There were 150 participants from over 35 companies in attendance at the workshop. All the participants were from Chinese shipyards, design companies and vessel owners. This workshop was a major event for the Chinese offshore market.

World’s First Solar-Powered, Mobile Wastewater Treatment Plant

Aspin, Kemp & Associates is proud to have provided design and manufacturing services to Island Water Technologies for the world’s first solar-powered, mobile wastewater treatment plant.

The REGEN system was designed as a wastewater treatment solution for remote areas. It will be tested by the Canadian military in the coming months to see if it is suitable for disaster relief and forward operating bases.

Aspin, Kemp & Associates recently demonstrated a successful Short Circuit Test on the DP3 Main Power and Propulsion Plant on the Deepwater Conqueror. These videos show the last 100ms of the test:



The Short Circuit Test takes only seconds to witness but proves that the AKA DP3 Main Power and Propulsion Plant is immune to major power disturbances, such as a short circuit on the main bus. All thrusters and distribution systems remain in service, and DP station keeping remains stable and is not influenced by the event.

Clean hybrid technology that's already proving its value in two of the world's most environmentally sensitive ports has received verification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA has verified the XeroPoint Hybrid Tug Retrofit System (XeroPoint) pioneered by Foss Maritime of Seattle, Wash., and Aspin Kemp and Associates (AKA) of Stratford, PEI. The system captured the attention of the maritime industry for its potential economic and environmental savings as a Foss harbor tug was undergoing extensive testing in the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is pleased to announce the introduction of the Cat®  Powered Marine Hybrid System, a complete hybrid propulsion package applicable to all engine platforms. Developed with electrical specialists Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA), the package utilizes AKA’s XeroPoint Hybrid marine propulsion system  and provides fuel savings of up to 25% and even emissions reductions. A recent CARB study found a 73% reduction in PM, 50% reduction in NOx & 26% reduction in CO2. Significant improvements are also seen in performance, control and noise levels. The new Cat Powered Marine Hybrid System is currently available for order through the Cat Dealer network.

Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the contract to supply a Diesel-Electric Power and Propulsion System for Bhagwan Marine’s Dive Support Vessel (DSV) that will be constructed at the Keppel Singmarine shipyard in Singapore. With headquarters in Western Australia, Bhagwan Marine services the oil & gas industry with its fleet of support vessels and landing crafts. Designed by Australian naval architects, Incat Crowther, the vessel will be a 56 metre, fully integrated catamaran that will perform key duties such as Dive Support, Geotechnical Survey, Cargo Transport and Safety Standby.

A Rotterdam-based tug has been revolutionarily refitted and turned into Europe’s first hybrid tug – aptly named the E-Kotug.

The 32 metre long vessel, which is a member of the Kotug fleet in the Port of Rotterdam, is able to carry out its daily operations with radically reduced emissions and in some cases noiselessly and solely battery-powered.

Foss Maritime, founded by the matriarch of the Foss family in 1889, is as much a cultural icon on the U.S. West Coast as McAllister or Moran are on the East Coast. Norwegian immigrant Thea Foss began the business when she bought her first row boat in Tacoma, Wash. and painted it the signature green and white. The Foss family grew the business into a launch  service ferrying crew and supplies in the 1910s, then shifted into towing work in the 1940s.
